Standards-Based Instruction

For the past few school years, SoWashCo leadership has been studying and researching the implementation of Standards-Based Instruction (SBI).

SBI is commonly defined as a skill or concept that students are expected to know following instruction with assessments aligned to demonstrate what students know and have learned.  The purpose of SBI is to clearly communicate what each student knows and is able to do according to the standards.  SBI provides a truly personalized view of progress for each learner.

For the 2016-2017 school year, we will introduce Standards-Based Instruction in our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classrooms.  With this introduction, families will be receiving a progress report that will provide information based on assessments and observations made throughout the year.  The progress reports are an exciting addition to our district.

Pre-K and Kindergarten families will be given the progress reports three times a year, once during fall conferences, once during winter conferences and at the end of the school year (via mail).

As we look toward implementation in other grade levels, we know this work will take multiple years and we will take a multifaceted approach to understanding how SBI would impact students, classrooms and the 833 community.

As plans are developed, stakeholder groups will see a long-term strategy for development and implementation of SBI through the new Strategic Plan.
